Wat is GHB

What is GHB?

Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a narcotic substance that occurs naturally in the human body in small amounts. However, synthetic GHB is used as a recreational drug for its euphoric and relaxing effects. It is usually sold as a colorless, odorless liquid with a salty taste, often packaged in small bottles or capsules.

Effects and risks

At low doses, GHB can cause feelings of euphoria , relaxation, and increased sociability. Higher doses can cause dizziness, nausea, loss of consciousness, and breathing problems. The dosing of gamma-hydroxybutyrate is extremely precarious; even a small amount more can cause an overdose, which can result in coma or even death .

Risk of addiction

GHB has a high risk of addiction. Regular use can quickly lead to physical and psychological dependence. Withdrawal symptoms are severe and can include insomnia, anxiety, tremors and in some cases hallucinations. Stopping gammahydroxybutyrate without medical supervision is strongly discouraged due to the potentially life-threatening withdrawal symptoms.

Legislation

In the Netherlands, gammahydroxybutyric acid is on Schedule I of the Opium Act, which means that it is prohibited to possess, produce or trade gammahydroxybutyric acid. Violations can lead to criminal prosecution .
